Where I work, I have been told of a number of people who swear by the protein diet. I have seen the results myself. The results were dramatic. They really did lose weight.

At the start of the diet, you drastically limit the amount of carbohydrates you consume. That way, you force your body to go into a state called lipolysis. As you do not consume enough carbohydrates for your energy needs, your body burns fat instead. Excess ketones produced in this process is eliminated in your urine.
My personal concern is the effect it may have on the kidneys. I mean, the kidneys have extra work to do. Hence, it is advisable to go for 6 monthly checkups when you are on the atkins diet.

Like any diet, to succeed with dr atkins diet, you have to make life long changes to your lifestyle. Regular exercise is a must. As is watching what you eat. Eat fresh meat and vegetables. Avoid sugar, white flour and corn syrup found in processed food and junk food. Eat a variety of food to keep your meals interesting and to make sure you get the variety of nutrients your body needs. Watch your weight, act immediately by restricting your carbohydrates when you notice an increase in weight.
